Duncan is the arrogant and anti-social delinquent  from the Total Drama series at least that's what  

he wants us to think beneath all the hostile hair  dye, punk rock piercings, and angsty attitude is  

a heart of gold and it's here that we'll find the  biggest conflict with Duncan's character he's too  

antagonizing to be a hero but he's too noble to  be a villain regardless of where he stands morally  

one of Duncan's most consistent character traits  is his bravado but as the series progresses Duncan  

is taken down a couple of pegs usually by  getting his butt kicked the pain the pain

too much to explain look I'm sorry

you'll notice that our supposed bad boy Duncan  always gets beaten up usually in an attempt  

to make someone else look stronger this trope  is called the Worf Effect if you want to make  

a new character seem tough have them beat up  your toughest character yeah I hate this trope  

Duncan is almost always at the receiving end of  this and the more it happens the harder it is  

to believe he's intimidating at all but instead  of it being a bunch of throwaway gags the show  

surprisingly makes Duncan losing his edge a  major plot point but where did it all start  

what dastardly deeds and dubious directions  led to Duncan's discouragingly dysfunctional

not enough people with originality  so here I am to save the day Jayniac  

see girls don't fight over a good  guy total bad guy right here oh

before Duncan even set foot on camp Wawanakwa  he spent some time in juvie though why is never  

made 100% clear we do get a bit of insight  into what types of things he'd be exposed to  

whether it's his skills in stealing, carving,  spray painting, and even acting a majority of  

Duncan's skills can easily be traced back  to his time in juvie or his early childhood  

fake sadness has been a gift of mine since I  was a kid watch and learn oh mom was that your  

grandmother's vase? Oh. having grown up in such  a hostile environment explains the antagonistic  

nature of Duncan's personality but what it doesn't  explain is his more honorable character traits  

Duncan takes his word very seriously and as  he puts it he's always straight with people  

he's the only quote unquote villain that remains  relatively loyal during all of his alliances not  

because he's naive quite the contrary Duncan's  one of the harder contestants to manipulate  

and he's pretty vocal about knowing he  might be double-crossed at the drop of a hat  

so he always knows when to get out he's kind  until the competition demands otherwise but any  

feat of kindness shown by Duncan is only limited  to his friends and his alliances on the opposite  

end we have characters like Harold who Duncan  regularly bullies because he just does yeah it's  

never made apparent why exactly Duncan targets  Harold specifically so much this is especially  

strange considering the fact that they're on  the same team we know that Duncan is more than  

willing to show kindness to Harold when he's  not looking so why so much hostility to his face  

well gosh when will you stop making my life so  brutal well I don't know when it stops being funny  

as in never as the scene suggests a lot  of Duncan's antagonism stems from his own  

amusement rather than any real distaste for who  he's antagonizing mind you this doesn't justify  

him being a bully I'm just saying Duncan's bad  because he thinks it's fun this explains why he  

never crosses the lines that other villains like  Heather or Alejandro very well might it's funny  

being bad but it's not funny being evil when  taking this quintessential part of who he is  

into consideration his fall from villainy makes a  lot more sense throughout the first season Duncan  

only takes the leadership role whenever his team  is in desperate need but in any other situation  

Duncan wants nothing to do with the leadership  role this comes as no surprise once you consider  

who his team leader is Courtney I already made a  video about Courtney so I'll be brief Courtney may  

have all the training required to make a great  leader but she lacks any of the social skills,  

Duncan is the exact opposite even though he's the  supposed broody bad boy Duncan introduces himself  

to everyone on his team right away he knows  each member of his team well enough to lead them  

out of their losing streak as early as the fourth  episode by the time the teams are split into two  

while Jeff is appointed leader it's Duncan that  calls most of the shots by the half point of  

season 2 Duncan turns into a full-fledged leader  and it's here that we'll find some of the cracks  

in his bad boy persona one of the best qualities  you can find in a good leader is their ability to  

build others up or at the very least have a mutual  understanding with them in order to make Duncan  

a believable leader he has to lose some of his  arrogance it can't be all about him if he wants  

his team to win this team building behavior is  gradually brought to the foreground as the series  

progresses and it's not like this is inconsistent  with his character oh yeah I don't think you will  

I think you talk a big game but underneath you're  nothing but a big cream puff fine my dog Petey ran  

away on me when I was six and i didn't want DJ  to have to go through the same thing okay but  

there is one really glaring problem with Duncan  that I don't see enough people talking about

hey hey it's the girls and they're going the wrong  way typical chicks with zero sense of direction!  

I don't know who's wedding Justin cried at  what kind of girly man cries at a wedding  

anyway? Hurry it up! Back off it won't go any  faster than this! What we need is a man behind  

the wheel! Ironic considering that this type of  behavior is exactly what got Ezekiel voted off  

in the very first elimination ceremony what the  heck bro why does Duncan get a pass this is made  

all the more irritating once you notice how badly  Duncan desires attention from certain females wish  

I was on the hero's team ah cheer up Gwen there  that should do it you think she was watching  

but we're getting ahead of ourselves and now a  Total Drama island video message from home to  

Duncan your parole officer here said we could  tell you we love you despite your arrest for  

the happy new year stunt or for selling your  father's hair pieces as pets or for the pool  

party in the city hall fountain come to think of  it do we love you that's a terrible thing to say

Duncan's home life reveals a lot about him  it's obvious that his parents disapprove  

of his juvenile antics but what really drives  the point home is the fact that he comes from  

a long line of cops his cousins aunts and even his  grandmother are all police officers obviously that  

would make Duncan the black sheep of his family  but this actually helps us understand why Duncan  

is already well as Leshawna put it a big cream  puff being surrounded by good people would  

definitely have an influence on Duncan's behavior  whether or not it'd be a positive influence is a  

completely different story it's possible that  initially Duncan's only reason for rebelling  

was to stand out from the rest of his family  but deep down he's always been a good person  

he gets called out for it multiple times during  the first three seasons but it's the fifth season  

where things get interesting the whole theme  of Total Drama All-Stars is heroes vs villains  

Duncan starts the season on the villains team but  after displaying a few heroic feats he switched  

over to the heroes team this infuriates Duncan and  leads him on a path trying to reclaim his villainy  

after several failed attempts Duncan finally  snaps and does something that's not only  

villainous but downright illegal ultimately  resulting in him being thrown behind bars  

dear mom how are you I am in jail just because I  blew up a resort and got kicked off of total drama  

all stars please send cake even in jail he's still  thinking of his mom the one thing that always  

brings Duncan's good side out is his relationships  once Duncan and Courtney start dating instead of  

the two working through their differences Courtney  just hands Duncan a list of things she'd like to  

change about him instructing him to memorize  everything on the list and instead of rebelling  

and not playing by the rules he actually goes  along with it the relationship lasts for two  

seasons but it's in the third season where we see  his rebellious habits rear their ugly heads once  

again abandon me again and it will not be pretty  get over here you big lug I'm not really mad  

I just missed you every time I ran from the cops I  thought of you Duncan cheats on Courtney with Gwen  

and to make a very long story short he's much  happier with Gwen that is until Courtney starts  

showing interest in other people come season 5.  Now here's where a majority of fans like to say  

that Duncan's character got derailed Duncan starts  obsessing over making Courtney jealous about him  

and Gwen and when Courtney just ignores him his  ego deflates truth be told this isn't completely  

out of character for Duncan remind her that  he's always been prideful of his social status  

and how he appears to the people around him  if this weren't true then he wouldn't feel  

the need to constantly remind everyone that  he's a bad boy and part of his bad boy persona  

involves getting the attention from girls  that he likes in other words it's cool if he  

doesn't show any interest in them but it's  not if they don't show any interest in him

this is for kissing my boyfriend that's for  him not being your boyfriend when he kissed me  

they're fighting over me because of this Duncan's  priorities start becoming skewed the more he  

obsesses over Courtney which then leads to Gwen  breaking up with him things only get worse once  

Courtney and Gwen start being friends again  let's go hey can I be part of your alliance why  

I could use some allies and I can  protect you from people like mike  

instead of accepting that the girls have moved  on from him and he should probably move on too  

Duncan says I'm surrounded by so much heroic  kindness wow I think it's starting to rub off  

is that why Gwen dumped me whatever  I'm still bad just watch come on  

Duncan's obsession with his image and  unwillingness to accept both the good and bad  

parts of himself are what  led to major insecurities  

insecurities that by themselves crippled any  potential development or self-realization  

Duncan could have had by focusing so squarely on  keeping with his brand he lost the motivation he  

once had to win a whole competition which by the  way what did Duncan do with the prize money this  

long-bodied, short-legged, pseudo-intelligent,  anti-social delinquent was able to do all but  

one thing except himself for who he is and  that my friend is How Duncan Lost His Edge!

Total Drama Island premiered in Canada all the way  back in 2007. When it came out I remember all of  

my classmates watching it together when the boys  were asked who their favorite character was we  

all said Duncan now with many years of growing  up I still think he's a really cool character  

Heather is just slightly above him and I  know not everyone's a big fan of season five  

heck I don't even like season five but what  happened to Duncan kind of makes sense it just  

wasn't handled very well total drama is supposed  to be getting a reboot soon let's see who the
